Metr. Onuphry Calls for Fidelity to Pure Orthodox Faith

KYIV — On the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, Metr. Onuphry of Kyiv and All Ukraine delivered a sermon emphasizing the preservation of the purity of the Orthodox faith during the Divine Liturgy. Addressing the faithful, he underscored that salvation requires adherence to unaltered doctrine rather than adapting faith to personal preferences or passions.

“Just as a person, to be healed, takes the medicines that heal, not the ones they like, so too, to be saved, one must adhere to pure faith,” the Primate said. He warned against elevating human reasoning above divine revelation, stating, “Where there is human wisdom, there is no God.” Faith, he stressed, cannot be reshaped according to individual will.

Reflecting on the meaning of the feast, Metr. Onuphry recalled the Church’s historic struggle against heresies and schisms, including the victory over iconoclasm. He described the Church as a “ship of salvation,” founded by Christ, and called on believers to live their Orthodoxy faithfully in both name and life.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Onuphry blessed the Lenten prayer rule for peace.
