ATHENS, GREECE — On February 27, 2026, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church announced the launch of a nationwide fundraising campaign to support the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The decision was adopted during the Synod’s February 4 meeting and later publicized through church channels.
The Synod called on all metropolises and parishes to participate, emphasizing that care for these historic spiritual centers is a shared responsibility of the entire Orthodox Church. Funds for St. Catherine’s Monastery will be collected on the fourth Sunday of Lent, March 22, while donations for the Holy Sepulchre will be gathered on Holy Thursday, April 9. Contributions will be deposited into designated accounts at the National Bank of Greece.
The announcement follows recent remarks by Patr. Theophilos III of Jerusalem regarding developments affecting the Sinai monastic community and the importance of continued support for Orthodox pilgrimage sites.
Previously, the UOJ reported that St. Catherine’s Monastery elected a new abbot.
