Patr. Daniel Marks Sunday of Orthodoxy in Sofia

SOFIA, BULGARIA — Patr. Daniel of Bulgaria spoke about the historical and spiritual meaning of the triumph of Orthodoxy over iconoclasm during services on March 1, 2026, the Sunday of Orthodoxy. He presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Sofia.
In his address, the Patriarch recalled the events of the iconoclastic controversy and the role of the Seventh Ecumenical Council in affirming the veneration of holy icons. He noted that the feast remains an enduring witness to the truth of the Orthodox faith and highlighted the need for spiritual steadfastness in contemporary society.
Following the Divine Liturgy, a traditional procession with holy icons took place around the cathedral. Earlier that morning, upon arriving at the church, Patr. Daniel also offered brief remarks to the media about the significance of the celebration for Orthodox Christians today.
