MUKACHEVO — The Mukachevo Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church solemnly welcomed an icon of St. Gabriel Urgebadze containing a particle of his holy relics on March 1, 2026, the diocesan press service announced.
The icon was painted in Georgia, the saint’s homeland. St. Gabriel is revered throughout the Orthodox world for his ascetic life and spiritual counsel, and devotion to him has grown steadily in recent years.
According to the diocese, the shrine was brought to Ukraine with the blessing of Metropolitan Theodore of Mukachevo and Uzhgorod. It will be permanently housed at Holy Trinity Church in the Bozdosh microdistrict of Uzhgorod, where the faithful will have ongoing access for veneration.
A formal reception ceremony was held in the morning on the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, which was followed by a festive Divine Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Theodore.
Diocesan officials invited clergy and laity to participate in the services, venerate the icon, and join in communal prayer marking the arrival of the shrine.
Previously, the UOJ reported that St. Gabriel Fool-for-Christ Church was consecrated in a Georgian village.
