Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

BEIRUT — The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) has issued an urgent humanitarian appeal as escalating military tensions across the region deepen an already severe crisis for civilians. The council warned that the recent surge in violence has resulted in mounting casualties, infrastructure damage, and widespread displacement, creating what it described as a “catastrophic” humanitarian situation affecting vulnerable populations.

In a statement from its Beirut headquarters, the MECC said the current crisis compounds years of instability that have already strained communities throughout the Middle East. Churches and affiliated institutions have been providing emergency assistance—including food, shelter, and medical aid—to families in need regardless of religious background. However, the council emphasized that the scale of suffering now exceeds the capacity of local humanitarian networks.

Lebanon has been particularly affected, with about 100,000 people currently sheltering in nearly 500 public facilities after evacuation warnings linked to fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Officials warn the number of displaced could rise rapidly as attacks continue, leaving many families searching for safety and basic necessities.
