Church of Cyprus Rebuts Claims of Collusion and Misconduct
Cyprus Church leaders push back against allegations from legal team of Metr. Tychikos while reaffirming disciplinary actions and calling for trust.
NICOSIA — The Church of Cyprus has issued a formal statement addressing recent controversies surrounding Metr. Tychikos of Paphos, seeking to clarify events and counter what it described as misinformation.
In an official April 28, 2026, communication, the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus stated, “Clergy who are under suspension are not permitted to wear the vestments associated with their rank,” referring to allegations that Metr. Tychikos had shown up to a parish last weekend wearing episcopal vestments (epitrachelion and omophorion) and attempting to perform the commemoration at the proskomedia inside the altar.
The statement further alleged that when corrected by a priest, “the former Metropolitan struck and pushed him” citing witness testimony. Separately, the Church denied claims that Abp. Georgios conspired with the mayor of Paphos to fabricate accusations, calling such reports “false and unfounded.”
"No one prevents the former Metropolitan from praying and chanting in various churches, especially since he possesses the qualifications of a chanter and has a melodious voice," the Archdiocese said. "Indeed, this is what he has been doing recently, visiting churches celebrating their feast days. However, he is not permitted to perform the commemoration at the Holy Prothesis, which, for reasons unknown, he did for the first time last Sunday."
The Archdiocese emphasized its position that disciplinary measures against Metr. Tychikos were based solely on ecclesiastical charges and upheld through synodal processes. It also rejected allegations of financial misconduct and encouraged anyone with evidence to report it to church or civil authorities.
The statement concluded by urging the faithful to trust the Church and avoid being misled, noting that a new Metropolitan for Paphos will be elected soon. The dispute follows Metr. Tychikos’ 2025 removal from administrative leadership.
Metr. Tychikos' legal team has since rejected the statement from the Archdiocese.
Previously, the UOJ reported that the legal team of Metr. Tychikos had alleged an economic and political conspiracy behind his removal.
