Patr. Theophilos III and Cardinal Pizzaballa Make Pastoral Visit to Gaza
Patr. Theophilos III and Cardinal Pizzaballa traveled to Gaza to bring pastoral support and solidarity to communities enduring humanitarian hardship.
GAZA CITY — Patr. Theophilos III of Jerusalem and Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa arrived in Gaza on June 22 for a pastoral visit aimed at supporting local Christian communities and others affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The two church leaders were accompanied by Dr. Josef D. Blotz, Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, as well as representatives of Malteser International. Their visit underscored the continuing concern of the Churches of Jerusalem for both the Christian population and the wider civilian community enduring hardship in Gaza.
During their stay, Patr. Theophilos and Cardinal Pizzaballa are expected to meet with clergy, monastic communities, Christian families, and others impacted by the conflict and humanitarian emergency. The visit includes prayer services, personal meetings, and other pastoral activities intended to offer encouragement and spiritual support to those facing uncertainty, loss, and displacement.
Church officials described the visit as an expression of Jerusalem’s pastoral responsibility toward the faithful in Gaza and a witness to Christian solidarity amid suffering. The participation of representatives from the Order of Malta and Malteser International also highlighted ongoing humanitarian efforts focused on medical care, relief assistance, and the protection of human dignity in the region.
The joint visit reflects continued cooperation among Christian leaders seeking to provide both spiritual and material support to communities affected by the crisis.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Theophilos and Abp. Ieronymos called for unity during a meeting in Athens.
