A beloved Orthodox landmark overlooking Cook Inlet now depends on public support to preserve its historic domes and crosses for generations to come.

NINILCHIK, AK — A fundraising effort is underway to restore the historic Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church, a landmark overlooking Cook Inlet that has served as a symbol of faith and Alaska’s cultural heritage since its construction in 1901.

The immediate goal is to raise funds for the replacement of the church’s five historic cupolas and crosses and the installation of a protective fence around the property. Organizers say the projects are essential to preserving both the structure’s integrity and its historic character.

The restoration effort is being carried out in cooperation with the local parish, the National Park Service, Russian Orthodox Sacred Sites in Alaska, and the Diocese of Sitka and Alaska. Previous donations have already supported the installation of a new roof and major electrical improvements, allowing the preservation work to move forward into its next phase.

Organizers are now appealing for additional support, inviting those with ties to Ninilchik, visitors who have admired the church, and others interested in preserving Alaska’s unique religious and cultural heritage to contribute. The historically accurate restoration is intended to ensure that the beloved church continues to inspire future generations. Donations can be made here.

Previously, the UOJ reported that an Arizona Orthodox mission parish launched a campaign to fund their new temple.
