Holy Cross Announces 'The Catechist' Certificate Program
Holy Cross is opening a new path for Orthodox Christians to deepen their faith and prepare for the vital ministry of catechesis.
BROOKLINE, MA — Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology has launched a dedicated webpage for "The Catechist: The Art of Listening and Teaching," a new year-long online Certificate Program in Orthodox catechism offered through The Scriptorium Initiative.
The program was conceived through the vision of Abp. Elpidophoros and the members of the Holy Eparchial Synod in response to the growing pastoral need for qualified lay catechists to assist clergy in the Church’s ministry of teaching. Holy Cross faculty subsequently developed the vision into an academic program under the leadership of Dean Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc.
Designed for lay leaders, parish educators, ministry volunteers, clergy spouses, recent converts, and others seeking deeper theological formation, the program combines recorded lectures and assigned readings with weekly live Zoom seminars. Its five modules cover the foundations of the Orthodox faith, moral theology and eschatology, sacramental and liturgical life, Orthodox spirituality, and catechetical pedagogy.
Participants may choose between a Certificate Track for those preparing to serve as parish catechists and an Enrichment Track without certification requirements. The inaugural module, "Foundations of the Orthodox Faith," begins Oct. 5 and continues through Nov. 13, with instruction from Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc, Dr. James C. Skedros, Fr. Demetrios Bathrellos, Fr. George Parsenios, and Fr. Philip Zymaris.
Previously, the UOJ reported that GOARCH was to host webinar on a new K-12 Sunday school curriculum.
