Nearly 130 Complete St. Vladimir's Catechist Certification Program
A growing wave of Orthodox inquirers is inspiring a new generation of trained catechists to serve their parishes.
YONKERS, NY — Nearly 130 aspiring catechists are completing St. Vladimir's Online School of Theology's Catechist Certification Program this month after joining a cohort that began in April, reflecting growing efforts to equip lay leaders to support Orthodox parishes experiencing an increase in inquirers and catechumens.
Created with the blessing of Metr. Tikhon and Metr. Saba, the program is designed to train catechists rather than provide catechesis itself. Participants learn how to assist parish clergy in introducing newcomers to the Orthodox faith, with some serving as volunteers and others taking on more extensive roles in parish ministry. The initiative was launched in response to growing interest in Orthodoxy across North America and beyond.
Among this year's participants is Leo Olson of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who enrolled after reading Metr. Saba's call to activate deacons and lay catechists in parish life. Olson said the program has exceeded his expectations through instruction focused on both the theological foundations and practical work of guiding seekers. Olson said: “His Eminence said God is doing something great, and so we all should respond to what that is. The course has not disappointed. We’ve heard from many different teachers, including two metropolitans, about the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of helping people find the will of the Father, the Truth of Jesus Christ, and the love of the Holy Spirit.” Fellow participant Matthew O'Connor of Holy Theophany Orthodox Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, said the training has already helped him begin teaching parish classes.
The program features instruction from Metr. Tikhon, Metr. Saba, several other hierarchs, faculty members from St. Vladimir's and St. Tikhon's seminaries, and additional Orthodox educators. Fr. Michael Nasser, the program's mentor, praised participants for their dedication to an intensive schedule and their enthusiasm for sharing the Orthodox faith.
