Holy Cross Launches New Orthodox Catechist Certificate Program

BROOKLINE, MA — Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology has announced the launch of "The Catechist: The Art of Listening and Teaching," a new year-long certificate program designed to prepare Orthodox Christians for the ministry of catechesis beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year.

Established with the blessing of Abp. Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the approval of the Holy Eparchial Synod, the initiative was developed in response to the growing need for well-trained lay catechists to assist clergy in teaching and forming the faithful. The program's vision originated with Abp. Elpidophoros and the Holy Eparchial Synod before being shaped into an academic curriculum by the faculty of Holy Cross under the leadership of Dean Rev. Dr. Eugen J. Pentiuc. Dr. James C. Skedros, associate dean of the School of Theology, will direct the program.

Open to lay leaders, parish educators, ministry volunteers, clergy spouses, recent converts, and other Orthodox Christians interested in teaching the faith, the program combines theological study with practical parish experience. Participants will complete five instructional modules featuring online lectures, readings, and weekly live seminars covering Sacred Scripture, Holy Tradition, the Nicene Creed, the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church, Orthodox spirituality, moral theology, and catechetical methods. Those pursuing certification will also complete a supervised parish practicum and capstone assessment under the guidance of their parish priest.

Two enrollment options will be available: a Certification Track for those seeking to become commissioned parish catechists and an Enrichment Track for students interested in theological formation without certification requirements. Classes begin Sept. 8 with the first six-week module and conclude with a capstone assessment in June 2027. More information on applications and program details are forthcoming.

Abp. Elpidophoros described catechesis as central to the Church's apostolic mission, expressing hope that the program will deepen theological formation and strengthen parish communities by preparing faithful Orthodox Christians to accompany both seekers and lifelong believers in their journey toward Christ. Interim President Fr. Michael Lambakis said the initiative extends Holy Cross' mission of serving the Church through theological education, while Fr. Pentiuc thanked the faculty for contributing their scholarship and pastoral experience to the collaborative effort.
