Sts. Peter and Paul Church Marks 110 Years of Orthodox Witness
A 110-year-old parish celebrated its past while investing in its future through worship, fellowship, and the ordination of new readers.
HERKIMER, NY — Parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church marked a significant milestone June 20–21 as the community celebrated the 110th anniversary of its founding with a visit from Abp. Michael. The archpastoral visit brought clergy, faithful, and guests together for a weekend of worship and fellowship honoring more than a century of Orthodox witness in Herkimer.
The central event of the celebration was a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday, during which Abp. Michael tonsured two members of the parish, Nikita Zaitsev and Milan Djurdjevich, to the rank of Reader. The service highlighted the parish’s continuing commitment to nurturing future generations of church servants and leaders.
Concelebrating with the Archbishop were Fr. Vasil Dubee, rector of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Protodeacon Paul Sokol, Dcn. Demetrios Richards, and Subdeacons Mark Federoff and Andrew Karlgut. Additional assistance in the altar was provided by Benjamin Goes and the parish’s altar servers. The parish choir contributed to the celebration with liturgical singing that enhanced the prayerful atmosphere of the service.
Following the Divine Liturgy, clergy, parishioners, and visitors gathered for a festive meal and fellowship. The anniversary observance offered an opportunity to give thanks for the parish’s history, reflect on the labors of past generations, and pray for the continued growth of Orthodox Christianity in the region.
Previously, the UOJ reported that a Canadian parish marked its 45th anniversary with a mortgage-burning ceremony.
