Cyprus Announces New Aid Initiative for Patriarchates of Jerusalem and Antioch

NICOSIA, CYPRUS — The Republic of Cyprus has announced a new package of humanitarian and reconstruction assistance for Christian and other vulnerable communities across the Middle East, including significant funding for the Patriarchates of Jerusalem and Antioch.

The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the 2026 initiative will be carried out through the office of the Republic's Special Representative for Religious Freedom and the Protection of Minorities in the Middle East. The program is designed to strengthen local communities, support church institutions, and promote interfaith coexistence and social cohesion throughout the region.

Among the largest grants is $173,000 for the Patriarchate of Jerusalem to restore the historic Church of St. Porphyrios in Gaza, support educational and social programs, expand school facilities, and provide daily care for children. Cyprus also approved a one-time $23,000 grant for Cypriot monks of the Holy Sepulchre Brotherhood serving at holy sites in Bethlehem, Bethany, and Jordan.

The Patriarchate of Antioch will receive $115,000 to help rebuild a primary school in Syria's Hama Governorate that serves children from multiple religious communities. An additional $55,000 will support Orthodox and other Christian churches and monasteries in Syria with food, drinking water, medical care, and assistance for elderly people and children. Cyprus also announced support for church-run projects in Jordan and said additional aid initiatives for Christian communities in Iraq are under consideration.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Mt. Athos would receive a new $3.9 million regional clinic.
