Mt. Athos to Receive New $3.9 Million Regional Clinic

MT. ATHOS — A new multi-functional regional clinic will be constructed on Mt. Athos to serve monks and pilgrims following the approval of a $3.9 million funding decision from the Region of Central Macedonia.

The project, approved by Regional Governor Athena Aidona, will be financed through the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) program of the Region of Central Macedonia. The new healthcare facility will be operated by the 4th Ministry of Health and will be housed in a newly constructed building within the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi.

Aidona said the initiative will address a longstanding need for medical services on the Holy Mountain, emphasizing its importance for both the monastic community and the many visitors who travel to Mt. Athos each year. She described the project as a lasting contribution to the Athonite State and part of the region’s continued support for preserving Mt. Athos’ heritage while improving infrastructure.

The clinic’s design will respect the architectural character and natural surroundings of Mt. Athos. The planned building will include two underground levels of approximately 400 square meters each, along with an above-ground section measuring 150 square meters. Special construction materials will be used to ensure that the facility blends with the existing environment, with the building occupying a 700-square-meter plot.
