Serbian Orthodox Iconography Camp Completes Two Frescoes at Shadeland Monastery
Serbian Orthodox iconography students completed two permanent frescoes of Serbian royal saints during a weekend of prayer, instruction, and fellowship in Pennsylvania.
SHADELAND, PA — Participants in the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America’s Second Diocesan Iconography Camp completed two permanent church frescoes at St. Sava Monastery in Shadeland, Pennsylvania, during a gathering held October 23–25, 2026.
With the blessing of Bp. Irinej, the camp brought together iconographers and students from across the United States for instruction in Orthodox iconography, theological study, prayer, and artistic collaboration. Under the direction of Fr. George Popovich, a priest and master iconographer from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, participants painted images of St. Stefan the First-Crowned and St. Stefan of Dečani, two Serbian royal saints associated with the Nemanjić dynasty.
The workshop included lectures on the historical development of iconography, sacred symbolism, liturgical vestments, color theory, and traditional painting techniques. Students received individual instruction throughout the process, contributing to frescoes that will remain part of the monastery church.
The camp combined hands-on artistic work with opportunities for spiritual growth and instruction in the theological significance of iconography. Prayer and participation in the Divine Liturgy formed an integral part of the gathering.

Organizers thanked Bp. Irinej for his support, along with volunteers Dee Dee Baskot and Millie Radovick for providing meals and hospitality. Keith C. Shauberger, caretaker of the Shadeland estate, was also recognized for assisting with preparations and accommodations.
The Diocese hopes to expand the program and welcome another group of students in 2027. Organizers said the initiative aims to preserve Orthodox iconographic traditions while preparing future generations to serve the Church through sacred art.
Previously, the UOJ reported that an iconography camp was held at the St. Sava Camp, inspiring a new chapter for the Serbian Orthodox Diocese.
