NICOSIA, CYPRUS — The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus expects Metr. Tychikos of Paphos to appear before it following a meeting with Abp. Georgios of Cyprus to discuss his case. The matter was addressed during an extraordinary Synod session on October 27, 2026.

The Synod reviewed a letter from Metr. Tychikos in which he declined to appear before the body. However, it accepted his request, conveyed through former associates, to meet privately with Abp. Georgios to discuss the matter. Following that meeting, the Synod expects Tychikos to appear before it and subsequently meet privately with Metr. Gregorios of Paphos.

The extraordinary session, chaired by Abp. Georgios, also addressed the recent deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan. The Synod expressed sorrow at the bloodshed, condemned acts of religious intolerance and restrictions on religious freedom, and offered condolences to the victims’ families. It had previously conveyed its condolences to Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem.

The Synod also completed the program of commemorative events marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Abp. Makarios III, the former primate of the Church of Cyprus and a prominent figure in the island’s modern history.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the appeal of former Metr. Tychikos was partially upheld as a new metropolitan was consecrated amid protests.
