America Is Becoming a Place of Holy Memory

In villages, cathedrals and ordinary homes, Orthodox saints have made an inherited faith part of this land’s own story.

Ask an Orthodox Christian in America to name a saint, and the mind may travel far beyond our shores—to the martyrs of Rome, the Desert Fathers of Egypt, or the monks of Mount Athos. These are lands where centuries of Christian life have given the Church generations of recognized saints. America’s Orthodox history is younger, and its list of known saints is shorter. But that history is still being written. The same faith that nurtured holiness in those ancient lands continues to take root and bear fruit here.

Even though Orthodoxy in this land is new when measured against the ancient Christian world, it has been here long enough for holy men and women to walk our soil, and for us to remember them. Thus, an American Orthodox footprint has begun to take shape.
