Cappella Romana Opens Search for New Music Director

PORTLAND, OR — Cappella Romana has launched a search for a new Music Director to oversee the ensemble's artistic vision and lead its performances of Byzantine chant and other sacred Christian music.

The position calls for an experienced conductor and scholar who will serve as the ensemble's chief artistic leader, directing performances, recordings, and tours while shaping long-term programming. The successful candidate will also collaborate with guest artists and researchers, develop concert series, and support the organization's fundraising and strategic planning efforts.

According to the job announcement, the Music Director's primary responsibility will be leading performances of medieval Byzantine chant while curating or conducting programs featuring Orthodox liturgical music and lesser-known works from Western Christian traditions in keeping with Cappella Romana's mission.

Applicants must possess advanced academic or professional qualifications in music, theology, or Byzantine chant, along with significant international experience in Byzantine chant performance and choral leadership. Experience as a music director, expertise in additional sacred musical traditions, and the ability to coach vocal ensembles are listed among the preferred qualifications.

The position is offered on a contract basis with annual compensation ranging from $40,000 to $50,000. The selected candidate will not be required to relocate to the Pacific Northwest, although regular travel for concerts, recordings, and tours will be expected.

Founded in 1991, Cappella Romana is a professional vocal ensemble dedicated to preserving and promoting the sacred musical traditions of the Christian East and West, with a particular emphasis on Byzantine chant. Based in the Pacific Northwest, the ensemble presents concert series in Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco, tours internationally, and produces recordings and publications devoted to Byzantine and other sacred music.
