After half a century of anticipation, St. George parishioners witnessed the fulfillment of a longstanding dream as their church was consecrated.

NORWALK, CT — St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Norwalk, Connecticut, celebrated the consecration of its church on October 31, 2026, concluding 50 years of prayers, sacrifices, and efforts by the parish community.

Abp. Elpidophoros of America presided over the consecration, following Vespers services the previous evening, during which he processed relics of five New Martyrs from the Greek island of Samothraki: Michael, George, Emmanuel, Theodoros, and a second George. Bp. Nektarios of Diokleia, Bp. Antonios of Phasiane, parish priest Fr. Nicholas Dassouras, and other clergy participated in the services.

During the celebrations, Fr. Dassouras was elevated to the rank of Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne. Parishioners greeted the announcement with cries of “AXIOS!” More than 200 faithful attended the consecration, witnessing the anointing of the church walls with Holy Chrism.

Fr. Dassouras described the occasion as a historic moment for the community after five decades of dedication. Parish Council President John Aslanidis called the consecration “not the end” but “a new beginning,” expressing hope for continued growth. The celebrations concluded with a banquet, performances by the parish Greek school, and Pontian youth dancers.

Previously, the UOJ reported that a Russian Orthodox Church in Paraguay celebrated its 98th anniversary.
