Raising Children With the Orthodox Calendar

From decorating Paschal eggs to celebrating the Nativity, family traditions help children experience the rhythms of the Orthodox Church year.

As C.S. Lewis explains in “Mere Christianity”, God is infinite and unbound by time as we experience it. Because we exist within time, we can easily forget this and attempt to understand God and His works within the limits of our own experience. Instead, we should recognize that God exists beyond the boundaries of time. Through the Divine Liturgy and the annual liturgical calendar, we continually participate in and commemorate the saving events of Christ’s earthly life, bringing their eternal significance into our present experience. I have found that this understanding helps us make the Orthodox feast calendar an integral part of everyday family life in ways we might not otherwise have imagined.
