Greek Hierarch: It Is Painful That the UOC Is Enduring the Trial of Schism
Metr. Nektarios lamented the schisms dividing the people of Ukraine and urged prayers for an end to wars around the world.
CORFU, GREECE — As reported exclusively by UOJ-Ukraine, Metr. Nektarios of Kerkyra, Paxoi, and the Diapontian Islands spoke of his sorrow over the divisions facing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), describing the situation as a painful trial for the sister Church. He made the remarks on October 31, 2026, following the consecration of a chapel dedicated to the Venerable Fathers of the Kyiv Caves on Corfu.
The service was attended by several UOC hierarchs, whose presence reflected the longstanding bonds between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and Metr. Nektarios of Corfu.
The Greek hierarch said the divisions facing Ukrainian Orthodox clergy and bishops were causing suffering among the faithful. He described the schisms as a source of particular pain for Orthodox Christians and expressed concern over the disagreements affecting the Church.
Our heart aches especially – as the heart of an Orthodox people, and also my own heart, that of the humble Bishop of Corfu – because the sister Church of Ukraine is facing particular trials from internal enemies, I would say, from temptation, from the devil, unfortunately, in the form of schisms and disagreements among clergy and bishops, which divide the people.
Metr. Nektarios also addressed the war, saying that armed conflict between Orthodox peoples was not from God, but from temptation. He called for prayers that warfare would cease throughout the world.
We sincerely pray to the Lord God, as well as before the holy relics of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker, that all wars on earth may subside and come to an end.
