UOC and Greek Church Hierarchs Consecrate Kyiv Caves Fathers Church in Greece
A new chapel honoring the Kyiv Caves Fathers was consecrated on Corfu by Greek and Ukrainian Orthodox hierarchs, continuing the island's longstanding ties with the UOC.
CORFU, GREECE — As reported exclusively by UOJ-Ukraine, Metr. Nektarios of Kerkyra, Paxoi, and the Diapontian Islands joined hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) on October 31, 2026, to consecrate a chapel dedicated to the Venerable Fathers of the Kyiv Caves at a monastic house on Corfu.
Metr. Nektarios led the consecration and Divine Liturgy, concelebrated by Metr. Clement of Nizhyn and Pryluky, Metr. Filaret of Lviv and Halych, Abp. Sylvester of Bilohorodka, Abp. Victor of Artsyz, Abp. Benjamin of Khotyn, Bp. Job of Kitsman, and other clergy.
Metr. Nektarios recalled his longstanding relationship with the UOC, dating back to the tenure of Metr. Volodymyr and continuing under Metr. Onuphry, both of whom visited Corfu. He also remembered serving with Metr. Onuphry at the Church of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker.
The Greek hierarch has previously expressed support for the canonical UOC and Metr. Onuphry, and UOC clergy and pilgrims have continued to visit the island. In December 2025, Abp. Victor celebrated an all-night Liturgy at the relics of St. Spyridon, while UOC pilgrims from Bukovyna participated in a procession with the saint's relics in August 2026.
Metr. Nektarios said of the new Corfu chapel, which was built at the request of a UOC hierarch:
We responded with great joy to the request of the vicar of the Odessa Metropolia, Archbishop Victor of Artsyz, to build here, in this place, a monastic house where several monks will be able to live, and where all who stay in this house will find spiritual consolation.
Previously, the UOJ reported that the Metropolitan of Corfu said St. Spyridon's blessing transcended geopolitical disputes.
