TBILISI, GEORGIA — The Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, was hospitalized after suffering serious health complications that required immediate medical attention, according to an official statement from the Georgian Patriarchate.

His Beatitude is currently receiving treatment at the Caucasus Medical Center, where doctors have described his condition as serious but stable. Church officials have called on the faithful to offer prayers for the 93-year-old primate, who has led the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1977 and remains a deeply respected national figure.

Authorities confirmed that the Patriarch was admitted to intensive care in the early hours of the morning due to severe internal bleeding. Mikheil Sarjveladze has been closely monitoring the situation, noting that while the bleeding has been brought under control, the Patriarch’s condition continues to be closely observed by medical staff.

Despite his advanced age and declining health, Ilia II has remained engaged in both ecclesiastical and public life, maintaining a strong influence within Georgia and beyond.

Previously, the UOJ reported that U.S. Vice President Vance spoke warmly of Georgia and Patriarch Ilia II.
