Position Overview

UOJ-America is seeking a thoughtful and experienced Opinion Editor to lead the publication’s commentary, analysis, and contributed-opinion section. The Opinion Editor will commission articles, develop contributors, edit submissions, and cultivate serious discussion of the religious, cultural, institutional, and public-policy questions affecting Orthodox Christians.

The successful candidate will possess strong editorial judgment and be able to distinguish informed argument from unsupported assertion. This position requires an editor who can preserve an author’s individual voice while improving clarity, organization, factual grounding, and persuasive force.

Responsibilities

Manage the publication’s opinion and commentary section.
Solicit essays, columns, responses, and analysis from qualified contributors.
Review unsolicited submissions and determine whether they are suitable for publication.
Edit opinion articles for clarity, structure, style, factual accuracy, and persuasive coherence.
Work directly with contributors through substantive revisions.
Develop a reliable network of clergy, scholars, journalists, attorneys, public officials, and informed lay writers.
Plan opinion coverage around major ecclesiastical, cultural, and public-policy developments.
Ensure that published commentary clearly distinguishes fact, analysis, and personal judgment.
Identify factual claims requiring citations, qualification, or additional support.
Maintain professional standards while allowing space for principled disagreement.
Coordinate responses, counterpoints, and symposia when a subject merits multiple perspectives.
Write editorials, columns, introductions, and explanatory notes.
Work with the General Editor and Editor-in-Chief on sensitive submissions and questions of editorial policy.
Maintain a consistent publication schedule for columns and contributed essays.

Required Qualifications

Professional editing, journalism, publishing, academic, or communications experience.
Exceptional writing and line-editing ability.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate arguments and identify factual, logical, or structural weaknesses.
Strong knowledge of Orthodox Christianity and the issues affecting Orthodox communities.
Ability to edit controversial material fairly and professionally.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work constructively with writers of varying experience.
Careful attention to sourcing, attribution, and potential legal or reputational concerns.
Ability to manage multiple contributors and deadlines in a remote working environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience editing opinion journalism, essays, academic writing, or public-policy commentary.
An established network within Orthodox, religious, academic, legal, or public-policy circles.
Familiarity with the canonical and jurisdictional structure of the Orthodox Church.
Knowledge of contemporary religious-liberty, ecclesiastical, geopolitical, and cultural debates.
Graduate-level study in theology, history, journalism, law, political science, or a related discipline.
Knowledge of a language relevant to international Orthodox affairs.

Employment Expectations

This is a full-time position requiring regular communication with contributors and the editorial team. The Opinion Editor should be prepared to work around significant news developments and publication deadlines. Evening or weekend work may be required.
