On Wednesday, in the museum's gallery of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour opens a historical and documentary exhibition "Russia and Mount Athos. To the 1000-year presence of the Russian monasticism on Mount Athos," reports Interfax.

There will be a solemn ceremony of issuing a postage stamp dedicated to the anniversary.

The exhibition covers a long history of relations between Russia and Mount Athos and for the first time represents such a significant set of original documentary evidence of ancient manuscripts, unique letters and documents, icons, graphics, photos and objects of decorative art from the collections of Russian archives, museums and private collections.

A separate section of the exhibition is devoted to the evolution of the relations between the USSR and Mount Athos. Many archival documents of this period were the secret for a long time and will be first presented to the public.
It is reported that the multimedia part of the exhibition, which presents the most valuable monuments of the Greek alphabet XI-XIII centuries decorated with unique miniature paintings, deserves special attention. An interactive map of the monasteries of the Holy Mountain will allow visitors to make a virtual journey through the centuries round the holy monasteries of the peninsula.

The program of celebration includes various research forums to mark Russia’s achievement in preserving Athos heritage.
