Athos photo exhibition for the 1000th anniversary of Russian presence on Mount Athos to open at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
There will be a solemn ceremony of issuing a postage stamp dedicated to the anniversary.
The exhibition covers a long history of relations between Russia and Mount Athos and for the first time represents such a significant set of original documentary evidence of ancient manuscripts, unique letters and documents, icons, graphics, photos and objects of decorative art from the collections of Russian archives, museums and private collections.
A separate section of the exhibition is devoted to the evolution of the relations between the USSR and Mount Athos. Many archival documents of this period were the secret for a long time and will be first presented to the public.
It is reported that the multimedia part of the exhibition, which presents the most valuable monuments of the Greek alphabet XI-XIII centuries decorated with unique miniature paintings, deserves special attention. An interactive map of the monasteries of the Holy Mountain will allow visitors to make a virtual journey through the centuries round the holy monasteries of the peninsula.
Recall the 1000th anniversary of Russian presence on Mount Athos will be celebrated this year. The program of celebration includes various research forums to mark Russia’s achievement in preserving Athos heritage. The events will take place in Moscow, Athens, St Petersburg and St Panteleimon Monastery.
