Kiev commemorates the heroes of Chernobyl

December 14, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy of Kiev and All Ukraine took part in the state ceremony of laying flowers at the memorial sign "Warriors of Chernobyl" and the Memorial Burial Mound to the Heroes of Chernobyl, reports the Information and Education Department of the UOC.

The ceremony of commemorating the soldiers and heroes of Chernobyl was attended by the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, relatives of Chernobyl heroes, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, members of the government and people’s deputies.

The participants observed a minute of silence in memory of liquidators of the Chernobyl accident.

The Day of honoring liquidators of the Chernobyl accident was set in Ukraine by the Presidential Decree of 10 November 2006 in memory of the end of the construction of the sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth power unit of Chernobyl nuclear power plant on December 14, 1986.
