Preparations for converting Hagia Sophia into a mosque have started in Turkey, reports the online edition Romfea.gr.
According to what Turkish historian and author Ahmet Anapali claimed that preparations for the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque have already begun. Although he did not reveal his source, he cited a man who is "the most reliable person in the country after Recep Tayyip Erdogan", who told him that "the carpets that will cover 7,000 sq.m. are ready”.
The carpets have been funded by an individual, not by the government.
On July 2, 2020, the State Council of Turkey will discuss the fate of the Hagia Sophia Cathedral, and if it deems illegal the 1934 decree to turn the Cathedral into a museum, Hagia Sophia will become a mosque.
Earlier, the Greek Church Synod called on Turkey to preserve the museum status of Hagia Sophia.
