Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor from 2017 to 2021 Robert Destro, a key member of Donald Trump's presidential campaign team, spoke out against the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Ukrainian authorities, as reported by the British publication Express.
Destro referred to Anti-Church Law 8371, which the Verkhovna Rada adopted on first reading, as "a statute that imposes collective punishment on innocent parishioners, priests, and parish communities whose only “crime” is to practice the faith they have known since childhood."
The former Assistant Secretary of State also stated that the authorities in Ukraine could be compared to a totalitarian regime, in which they "declare that their citizens are traitors because they refuse to accept state control of their religious beliefs, practices, associations, or leaders."
As a reminder, we have opened a fundraising campaign for international legal defense for those unjustly persecuted in the "UOJ case". We urge you to support us in this fight!
