Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, in his address on July 26, supported Pope Francis's idea regarding the Olympic truce in connection with the start of the Olympic Games in Paris, reports ec-patr.org.

"We take this opportunity of the official opening of the Olympic Games tonight to join our voice with that of His Holiness Pope Francis in favor of the Olympic truce, which has been an essential condition for the holding of the Olympic Games since ancient times, revered by all as sacred and inviolable," Bartholomew stated.

He expressed the hope that the Games would become "the starting point not just for a temporary ceasefire, but for the cessation of all bloody conflicts, especially in the troubled Ukraine and the turbulent Middle East, and for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in these much-suffering regions."

As the UOJ reported, the international community was outraged by the parody of 'The Last Supper' performed by transvestites at the Paris Olympics.
