The strongest earthquake in two months strikes Mount Athos on Sunday

Recent months have seen intense seismic activity across most of Mount Athos. This has raised concerns among the monks, residents, and scientists who are closely monitoring the situation, reports orthodoxianewsagency.gr.

Earthquakes of varying magnitudes have been occurring almost daily on the Holy Mountain, but so far, they have been relatively weak. The most noticeable tremor, with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded on Mount Athos on Sunday, September 22.

Seismologists believe that the residents of the monastic republic should not be overly concerned, as experts do not anticipate a strong earthquake exceeding 6 on the Richter scale.

"Of course, this doesn’t mean that a stronger earthquake cannot occur. We must remain vigilant and on guard..." noted Professor of Seismology Manolis Skordilis.

Mount Athos monks have been advised to exercise caution and avoid using old buildings that "have issues".

As the UOJ previously reported, Mount Athos had been shaken by series of seismic tremors for two weeks.
