TIME magazine published its list of the top 200 inventions changing the world in 2024. The Ukrainian digital services app Diia is featured in the "Apps and Software" category as the first invention to offer a fully digital marriage process.
"Since September, Ukrainian citizens have been able to get married in a most unusual way: via Diia, the country’s statewide app, which has more than 20 million users. The system is simple, if unromantic: One partner proposes through the app, and the other is sent a notification. If the second party says yes within 14 days, the two agree on a date for a video call wedding, complete with officiant, on the Webex platform," the article accompanying the nomination states.
According to TIME, while this may sound like a "strict way to confess love, it was designed to help many Ukrainian couples physically separated due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine."
According to itc.ua, more than 600 couples have married through Diia, with over 6,700 applications submitted and marriage proposals sent by 1.3 million Ukrainians. The service has a total of 21 million registered users.
As previously reported by the UOJ, Diia explained whether LGBT couples can register a marriage online.
