The head of the Cypriot Church, Archbishop Georgios, spoke about the importance of the Cypriot Church in preserving Hellenic identity during an interview on the program "Τομές στα Γεγονότα," reports the Greek UOJ website.
Commenting on the political situation between Greece and Turkey, the archbishop highlighted the strategic significance of Cyprus for Hellenism as a whole.
"If Cyprus falls, the destruction of Greece will commence," he said, explaining that the island serves as an eastern stronghold of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. In his view, the loss of Cyprus's sovereignty would pave the way for further pressure on Greece regarding its national sovereignty.
Speaking about the Church’s work, the Archbishop stressed its substantial contribution to preserving the Greek language in Cyprus. "If we speak Greek here, it is thanks to the Church," he stated.
The Cypriot Primate also shared that he had already presented a proposal to Cyprus’s Minister of Education to enhance the teaching of Greek history in schools.
He called for unity and vigilance in the face of the challenges confronting Hellenism. "We must remain united because only then can we protect our history, our faith, and our homeland," concluded the archbishop.
Earlier, a hierarch of the Phanar claimed that the Gospel spread worldwide thanks to Hellenism.
