Shevchuk: Asking about the model of unity? Remember the Union of Brest

The Union of Brest is a model of unity between the Orthodox and Catholics, which may be interesting today, the head of the UGCC Sviatoslav Shevchuk said at a symposium dedicated to the 425th anniversary of the union at the Ukrainian Catholic University, reports the UGCC website.
The head of the Greek Catholics said that the UGCC "as a global Church carries a mission and tasks, and possibly a challenge, for the modern world of East and West – to preach, live and even die for the idea of unity between the Churches".
Shevchuk is convinced that Greek Catholics need to work on a model of unity since he will be asked what the UGCC offers to "universal Christianity".
However, the head of the UGCC believes that already now its structure carries the model of unity proposed in the Union of Brest.
“I would like us to look at the event of the Union of Brest from different aspects since we carry a certain model of unity, perhaps imperfect and not the same as the dreamers saw it, but this is a certain model that may be interesting today,” he said.
As reported, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine called for efforts to ensure that the "successes" of the ecumenical dialogue between Catholics and Orthodox Christians received particular practical implementation.
