Growth of Orthodoxy Apparant During Bsp. Neofitos of Eldoret and Northern Kenya Visit to Turkana

Turkana, Kenya—His Grace Bishop Neofitos of Eldoret and Northern Kenya made his first in-person visit to the region, bringing encouragement and hands-on leadership after previously relying on clergy representatives. His visit centered around catechism training sessions—part of an initiative funded by the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC)—that are introducing the Orthodox Faith to 15 communities, including 10 hearing the Gospel for the first time.

The bishop's presence marked a turning point. He ordained two priests and two deacons, tonsured 20 readers, and celebrated key sacraments such as marriages, strengthening the foundation of the Turkana Deanery. His visit also included outreach to communities in Nalukuwoi and St. Paul Chokchok, where improved access to clean water has enabled small-scale farming—an encouraging sign of both spiritual and physical renewal in a region long challenged by drought.

For many centuries, the Patriarchate of Alexandria—which claims jurisdiction over all of Africa—has launched only limited missionary efforts south of the Sahara. Efforts have increased since a large number of clergy and faithful in sub-Saharan Africa expressed their dissatisfaction with the Patriarch's policies—exasperated by his recognition of the schismatics in Ukraine, leading to the creation of the Russian Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa. Amid this ecclesial struggle, or perhaps in spite of it, the Church is growing across the African continent.

It is our sincere hope that what is emerging in Turkana and elsewhere is more than just growth—but the blossoming of a locally rooted Orthodox Church, led by newly ordained clergy, committed catechists, and faithful laity. This dynamic progress reflects the power of faith, local initiative, and missionary support working together toward a shared vision for the Church’s future.
