SOFIA, Bulgaria—Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria led a prayer service and procession today, May 24, 2025, to mark the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education, Culture, and Slavic Literature.
Celebrated at the monument of Saints Cyril and Methodius and concluding at the National Library named in their honor, the event was attended by clergy, public officials, cultural leaders, and citizens.
In his address, the Patriarch called the day both a time of joy and reflection, offering thanks to God for the gift of the Bulgarian language and those who made it a vehicle for divine truth. He emphasized that the celebration is not only of letters, but of the Word—both in human speech and the eternal Logos.
The Patriarch underscored the holiday’s Christian foundation, noting that the alphabet was first used to translate the Scriptures and the writings of the Church Fathers. Vice President Iliana Yotova echoed the cultural and unifying power of the Bulgarian language, affirming its role in shaping national identity and spiritual life. Together, the speeches affirmed that Bulgaria’s script and culture remain rooted in the enduring light of faith and education.
