Citizens Protest Dismissal of Metropolitan Tychikos in Paphos
PAPHOS, Cyprus—On May 25, 2025, a large rally of believers of the Paphos Metropolis took place in Paphos, demanding the return of Metropolitan Tychikos to the throne. According to the believers, the Synod of the Cyprus Church unjustly dismissed the metropolitan. As reported by a UOJ correspondent, about 400-500 people came to the city hall.
People stood with placards saying "We demand the return of our metropolitan", "God does not bless injustice", "Tychikos is worthy" ,"The final word belongs to God." After standing at the city hall, the believers went to the Paphos Metropolis. After the dimissal of their metropolitan, the head of the Cyprus Church, Archbishop Georgios, temporarily took over the management of the metropolis.
The UOJ previously reported that, according to materials from Cypriot media, the Synod dismissed Metropolitan Tychikos after a letter from Patriarch Bartholomew to Archbishop Georgios demanding to "call the Metropolitan of Paphos to order". Elder Dositheus of Agia Skepi has sharply criticized the removal.
