New Orthodox Book Challenges Gender Theory from Theological Perspective
JUNE 12, 2025 — In response to the rapid rise of transgender ideology and its growing influence in Western society, Holy Trinity Publications (HTP) has announced the forthcoming release of “Renewing Gender: An Orthodox Perspective” by noted theologian Dr. Jean-Claude Larchet. The book marks the first comprehensive Orthodox Christian critique of contemporary gender theory published in English.
Dr. Larchet holds doctorates in philosophy and theology from University of Nancy and University of Strasbourg, respectively, and taught philosophy for nearly 35 years. He has authored more than 35 books and numerous articles, with his writings being translated into 19 languages. This particular work was translated into English by Archibald Andrew Torrance.
“Orthodox Christian scholar Dr Jean-Claude Larchet seeks to answer the claims of gender theory with a scriptural and patristic vision of man as God created him, for communion with Him. The author shows that Christianity proposes a transfiguration of gender that goes beyond the limits of both fallen human nature and vacillating social norms,” the HTP website states.
With increasing numbers of children and young adults identifying as transgender, many Christian communities are struggling to respond pastorally and theologically. Dr. Larchet addresses this challenge by examining the historical development and cultural spread of gender ideology, while grounding his analysis in Scripture and the Church Fathers. He argues that Orthodox Christianity affirms the inherent equality and complementary nature of the sexes, offering a spiritual vision of human identity rooted in communion with God.
Holy Trinity Publications is offering a 15% discount on pre-orders of the book, reducing the price through the September 16 publication date. Pre-orders will be shipped as soon as stock becomes available, potentially ahead of the official release. Readers are encouraged to consider purchasing multiple copies for clergy, catechists, parents, and counselors navigating these complex issues.
