Senate Passes Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON, DC — In a landmark 51-49 vote, the Senate passed the One Big Beautiful Bill, defunding Planned Parenthood, with Vice President J.D. Vance breaking a 50-50 tie. The bill, which halts taxpayer funding for the abortion provider for one year, now awaits House confirmation.
Three Republicans—Sens. Rand Paul, Thom Tillis, and Susan Collins—joined Democrats in opposing the measure, citing fiscal or other concerns.
The Senate parliamentarian upheld the defunding provision’s inclusion in the budget reconciliation process, defeating a Democrat-led amendment to preserve Planned Parenthood’s funding.
Planned Parenthood, which performed over 420,000 abortions in 2024 and received nearly $800 million in taxpayer funds, has long been criticized by pro-life advocates.
“This is a crucial victory against an industry that endangers women and prioritizes abortion over comprehensive care,” said SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser. She urged the House to pass the bill swiftly for President Trump’s signature, emphasizing that community health centers offer better alternatives.
While the defunding is limited to one year, down from a proposed decade, pro-life leaders hailed it as a historic step toward ending taxpayer support for the abortion giant.
