On December 16, the UN General Assembly approved a Russian Resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism and neo-Nazism. 130 countries voted in support of the Russian initiative and 49 abstained, including a number of EU countries, Great Britain, Georgia and Moldova. Only two countries – Ukraine and the United States – were against, reports TASS.

The resolution was titled "Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices which contribute to the escalation of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance". The document calls on governments around the world to prevent "revision of the results of the Second World War and denial of crimes against humanity and war crimes".

The resolution also condemns the use of educational materials that promote racial discrimination, violence and hatred based on ethnicity, nationality, religion or belief.

Russian Foreign Ministry Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Grigory Lukyantsev noted that the resolution stressed the inadmissibility of "the glorification of those involved in the crimes of Nazism, including the whitewashing of former members of the SS organisation, including Waffen-SS units that were declared criminal by the Nuremberg Tribunal".

As reported, a sculpture similar to the "beast" from the Apocalypse was erected near the UN building.
