Patriarch of Romania: Theotokos 'Calls Us to Support Large Families'
BUCHAREST — On September 8, 2025, Romanian Patriarch Daniel led the Divine Liturgy at the “St. George the Great Martyr” chapel in Bucharest’s Patriarchal Residence to celebrate the Nativity of the Theotokos, according to basilica.ro. He urged the faithful to support large families and nurture children in Christian values:
The Nativity of the Theotokos should encourage all parents with children, and those who wish to have them. The Virgin Mary is the patroness of all families and children. She calls us to support large families and ensure children are raised in faith, as through faith and holy living, children and parents can become saints—citizens not only of their earthly homeland but also of the heavenly kingdom.
He explained the significance of the date, noting:
The number eight symbolizes eternity. The Nativity is celebrated on the eighth day of the church year because through the Theotokos, the eternal Son of God entered time to save the world from sin and death, granting eternal life.
Pat. Daniel called the Virgin Mary the “new Eve,” contrasting her obedience with Eve’s disobedience. He cited her response at the Annunciation:
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to Your word!” Today’s apostolic reading (Philippians 2:7–10) speaks of Christ’s humility, born of a humble and obedient mother. The Theotokos is honored with joy because from her shone Christ, our God—the Sun of Righteousness.
With the new school year beginning, he addressed educators and families, saying:
The greatest wealth is spiritual and intellectual formation. We greet all students, teachers, and educators who enrich the souls of children and youth, bringing joy to families, schools, the Church, and society.
He also emphasized the role of priests:
They baptize children, call them to church, and, alongside religious educators, teach not only the theory of faith but its practice—prayer, confession, communion, and helping parents, neighbors, the elderly, and the sick.
Pat. Daniel stressed that Christian education is a confession of Christ, reinforcing its importance in shaping faithful communities.
