COLOGNE — In September, the mayor of Cologne, Germany, Henriette Reker, awarded a certificate of appreciation to the parish of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Pochaiv Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, reports the website of the UOC's Department of External Communications and Relations.

The mayor commended the community, headed by Archpriest Serhiy Haevskyi, for its substantial contributions to public life in the city, its active involvement in volunteer, cultural, and social initiatives, and its important role in fostering intercultural dialogue.

The gratitude to the UOC parish was presented by the mayor of the Cologne district of Nippes, Diana Siebert, on Sunday, October 5, in the church where the Ukrainian Orthodox parish conducts services.

"People here feel supported due to you," she said. "We are grateful for your active involvement in the life and development of the city. Your volunteer work serves as an example for many. Today, we see that you have succeeded in bringing together Ukrainians and Germans. Thanks to your efforts and dedication, many have the opportunity to integrate more quickly, and Ukrainians are able to preserve their culture."

Archpriest Serhiy Haevskyi thanked the authorities of Cologne for the high appreciation of the community's work.

"This is a recognition of the efforts of all those who, with their kindness, sacrifice, and faith, help build a bridge of friendship between Ukraine and Germany, support those in need, and affirm Christian values in our community," said Fr. Serhiy.

Previously UOJ reported that, in Ukraine, the popular Lviv-based TV channel NTA organized surveillance of Orthodox believers, exposed the addresses of private apartments where divine services are held, and labeled parishioners as “potential murderers” and “FSB agents.”
