Pro-Life Coalition Urges Congress to End ‘COVID Subsidies’ Funding Abortion-Covering Plans

WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than 100 pro-life organizations have signed a joint letter urging Congress to end the Affordable Care Act’s “COVID subsidies,” which they say bypass long-standing federal protections against taxpayer-funded abortion. The subsidies, set to expire at the end of the year, have become a key issue in the ongoing government funding standoff.
According to reporting from Life News, the groups argue that the temporary pandemic-era subsidies allow taxpayer money to flow to insurance plans that cover elective abortion, undermining the Hyde Amendment’s ban on federal abortion funding.
Pro-life advocates have pointed to the recent One Big Beautiful Bill (H.R. 1) — signed by President Trump on July 4 — as an example of renewed federal efforts to protect taxpayer conscience rights. The law defunded abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood from Medicaid reimbursements for one year and closed loopholes that had allowed indirect abortion funding.
The coalition, which includes National Right to Life, warned that if ACA subsidies are extended, they could become a permanent funding stream for the abortion industry. As the December deadline approaches, they are calling on lawmakers to protect the integrity of the federal budget and the conscience rights of millions of Americans by allowing the subsidies to expire.
"The pro-life movement is united in its answer," Madison LaClare, Director of Federal Government Affairs for National Right to Life, said. "Congress must let these subsidies expire and ensure that no federal dollar ever goes to fund the destruction of innocent human life."
Previously, UOJ reported that the Trump administration is taking steps to overturn a Biden-era regulation that permitted taxpayer funds to cover travel expenses for unaccompanied illegal alien minors seeking abortions.
