Massive Crowds Mark Feast of St. Andrew in Greece

PATRAS — Tens of thousands of faithful filled the Cathedral of St. Andrew for the Feast of the Apostle Andrew, with clergy and attendees calling this year’s turnout one of the largest in recent memory. As reported by the Orthodox Times, pilgrims formed continuous lines from the cathedral into the early morning hours, undeterred by cold weather.

Throughout the multi-day celebration, Patras saw an extraordinary influx of worshippers seeking to venerate the relics of the city’s patron saint. The most striking scenes came during the all-night vigil on the eve of the feast, where crowds inside and outside the cathedral created what was described as an “unending river” of pilgrims. Long queues persisted until midnight on the feast day, and post-feast Vespers and the Supplicatory Service drew overflowing crowds both inside the church and in the surrounding grounds.

The vigil was led by Bishop Chrysanthos of Kernitsa with clergy of the Metropolis of Patras. Hymns were offered by the Byzantine Choir “Theodoros the Phocaean,” directed by Charalambos Theotokatos. Bishop Chrysanthos concluded the service with a pastoral message and blessings for the faithful.

During the post-feast services, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Patras presided and delivered a stirring homily. “This is the magnificence of the Orthodox people of Greece. This is the Church of our Crucified and Risen Lord. This is the city of Patras — reborn, illuminated, and sanctified by the teaching and martyrdom of the Holy Apostle Andrew,” he said, praising the participation of all, especially the youth.

Previously, UOJ reported that Pat. Bartholomew of Constantinople and Pat. Daniel of Bulgaria held a meeting in Greece.
