Holy Virgin Cathedral Hosts Retreat on Hieromonk Seraphim Rose
Lenten retreat in San Francisco will examine the life and legacy of Hieromonk Seraphim of Platina.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Holy Virgin Cathedral will host its XV Annual Lenten Retreat on Sunday, March 22, 2026, focusing on the life and legacy of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose of Platina. The retreat follows a December 2025 decision by the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to establish a commission studying his life, legacy, and veneration.
Hieromonk Seraphim, a former chanter-reader at Holy Virgin Cathedral, is widely known for his theological writings and missionary work. His veneration has grown internationally, with recognition from hierarchs including Patr. Daniel of Bulgaria and Metr. Nikoloz of Akhalkalaki. Pilgrims continue to gather annually at his gravesite at St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina.
The retreat will feature presentations by Bp. James of Sonora, chairman of the new commission, and Archpriest Martin Person, who will reflect on Fr. Seraphim’s biography and theological legacy. The day will include Divine Liturgy, fellowship meals, lectures, and a clergy roundtable Q&A session.
