Abp. Dmitri Commemorated at Premiere of New Divine Liturgy

DALLAS, TX — St. Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral hosted the premiere of composer Nicholas Reeves’ “The Divine Liturgy for Small and Large Choirs” during services on August 28 and 30, drawing congregations that filled the cathedral for both occasions. The weekend also commemorated the 15th anniversary of the falling asleep of Abp. Dmitri (Royster), whose ministry significantly shaped the growth of Orthodox Christianity in the American South.

A chamber male choir provided the liturgical responses during Friday’s service. Sunday’s Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, presided over by Bp. Gerasim of Fort Worth, Locum Tenens of the Diocese of the South, featured two choirs and portions of Reeves’ composition performed by ensembles ranging from three to five singers.

The nearly four-year effort to organize the weekend was overseen by Cathedral Director of Music Christopher Reeves. The musical premiere thus became part of a broader commemoration connecting the cathedral’s present artistic life with Abp. Dmitri’s legacy.

Following Friday’s service, the congregation heard a letter written by the late Abp. Dmitri. He encouraged Christians to approach technological change without fear, avoid harsh judgment of non-Christians, and remain faithful to Christ in a society increasingly shaped by permissiveness. He also urged parishes to devote greater attention and resources to caring for the poor.

At Sunday’s conclusion, Bp. Gerasim highlighted the growing number of Orthodox artists working in the United States, including iconographers, architects, filmmakers, and composers, many of whom are members of St. Seraphim Cathedral.
