Holy Cross Monastery is seeking $3 million for a new dormitory that will expand its brotherhood by 19 cells while providing specialized care for aging and infirm monks.

WAYNE, WV — Holy Cross Monastery is preparing to begin construction on a new $3 million monastic dormitory that will expand its brotherhood and provide dedicated care for elderly and infirm monks.

The monastery, which has maintained a brotherhood of approximately 27 monks for the past decade, said growing numbers of pilgrims and men seeking the monastic life have exceeded its capacity to welcome new residents. The planned dormitory will add 19 monastic cells, allowing the community to accommodate more men pursuing a life of service to Christ.

The building’s first floor will address the monastery’s need for improved medical and long-term care facilities. Plans include permanent living quarters for up to four aged or infirm monks, separate accommodations for four cell attendants, two temporary recovery rooms for monks recovering from illness or surgery, and two medical examination rooms.

The second floor will provide cells for 11 additional monastics. The building will also include accessible facilities, showers, restrooms, laundry facilities, and storage space to support the expanding community.

The project follows the completion of the structure of the monastery’s new church and trapeza, although work remains on the iconostasis, stone Holy Table, and interior frescoes. The monastery hopes to break ground on the dormitory by the end of October 2026 and is asking benefactors to support the project through online donations, checks, and other tax-deductible gifts.

Previously, the UOJ reported that a relic of St. Anna’s hand was to visit Holy Cross Monastery.
