Information or Wisdom?

Education has always been an essential part of becoming a well-rounded Orthodox Christian. Yet before we ask what we should learn, we must first ask a more fundamental question: What kind of education are we pursuing, and how should we approach learning as Orthodox Christians?

The Overwhelming Age of Information

We live in an age of unprecedented access to information. Within seconds, we can retrieve facts, opinions, books, lectures, articles, and podcasts from the devices we carry in our pockets. This accessibility is undoubtedly a blessing. When we encounter an unfamiliar subject, we can quickly seek answers, deepen our understanding, and explore perspectives that would have been difficult to access in previous generations.

Yet, this abundance of information presents unique challenges.

One challenge is that information can easily become detached from genuine learning. Instead of internalizing knowledge, we increasingly outsource it. We rely on search engines and digital devices to remember information for us. While this convenience is useful, it can create the illusion that we understand something simply because we know where to find it. Knowledge that has not been absorbed, reflected upon, and integrated into our lives is not truly our own.
