Since 2004, the Metropolis of Irinoupolis has baptized over 60,000 individuals in the region.

MOROGORO — On September 21, 2025, the Orthodox missionary center in Morogoro, eastern Tanzania, hosted a mass Baptism ceremony, welcoming 372 new members into the Orthodox Church under Bishop Dimitrios of Irinoupolis, Patriarchate of Alexandria. This event, reported by Romfea, marks the 21st consecutive year of such ceremonies at the mission.

Of the newly baptized, 205 were former Muslims who completed catechesis led by local priests before receiving Baptism and their first Holy Communion. Since 2004, the Metropolis of Irinoupolis has baptized over 60,000 individuals in the region, reflecting the Orthodox Church’s growing presence in East Africa.

The ceremony concluded with an agape feast, funded by Styliani Zacharegka of Thessaloniki in memory of her husband, Christodoulos, and honoring Tanzanian missionaries Nun Thekla and Paraskevi Vamvakidou. The Morogoro mission center, where the event occurred, began construction in December 2024. Earlier this year, additional baptisms took place in central and northern Tanzania, with over 30 catechumens baptized in March alone.

Tanzania remains a key region for Orthodox missionary work, with ongoing efforts to expand outreach across East Africa.
