Mass Baptism Celebrated at Alexandria Patriarchate Mission in Tanzania
Metr. Agathonikos led a mass Baptism in Tanzania, celebrating new Orthodox faithful and emphasizing lifelong spiritual commitment despite heavy rain.
IRINGA, TANZANIA — During the Feast of Theophany, Metr. Agathonikos of Arusha presided over a mass Baptism at the Missionary Center of the Patriarchate of Alexandria’s Holy Metropolis of Arusha. Despite heavy rain, participants remained focused and reverent throughout the ceremony. While exact numbers were not reported, photos suggest dozens were baptized.
In his address, Metr. Agathonikos emphasized that Baptism marks the beginning of a lifelong spiritual journey and the importance of committed ecclesial life within Orthodox tradition. Mass baptisms have become increasingly common in Tanzania and across Africa, reflecting growing interest in the Orthodox faith and its authentic Christian witness.
The Missionary House of St. Dionysios on Olympus provided crucial support through catechesis, sponsorship, and guidance for the newly baptized. Following the ceremony, attendees shared an agape meal generously provided by Mrs. Kalliopi Myroti, celebrating the new members of the Church and the flourishing of Orthodoxy in the region.
Previously, the UOJ reported that eight people were baptized as Orthodox mission expands in Cuba.
