House Republicans Advance Bill Protecting Pregnancy Centers
House Republicans have advanced legislation clarifying that states may use TANF funds to support pro-life pregnancy centers without federal interference.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Republicans have advanced legislation aimed at protecting pro-life pregnancy centers and affirming states’ authority to support them using federal assistance funds. On January 14, the House Ways and Means Committee voted along party lines to advance H.R. 6945, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, with all Republicans in favor and all Democrats opposed.
Introduced on January 6 by Rep. Michelle Fischbach (R-MN), with Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Claudia Tenney (R-NY), the bill clarifies that states may direct Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds to pregnancy help organizations. It also seeks to prevent federal agencies from restricting such support through regulatory changes or reinterpretation of existing law.
National Right to Life praised the measure, emphasizing that pregnancy centers provide vital services to women and families, including prenatal education, counseling, and material assistance. House leadership is expected to bring the bill to the floor this week before it moves to the Senate.
